Often our bad habits are learned from behaviours that were in the past a solution, but are now outdated and so no longer serve that purpose; for example, a person who is shy may drink alcohol believing that this will overcome their shyness and make them more confident, however, they may find themselves drinking more often, the drinking was used to solve a problem and then became a problem in itself.
